“Why would we want to continue to be, you know, co-signees on this madness that is hurting our friends and neighbors and making us look less and less like America?” Swalwell said on CNN.
“This is a Republican-run government. They have the White House, the House and the Senate. They’ve had plenty of months to put forward legislation where they could work with us to get this passed. They waited till the very last minute,” he added. “Donald Trump set a meeting, canceled a meeting, reset a meeting. This is entirely on them. And as I said, I don’t want to be a co-signee to this tyranny.”
Government funding is slated to expire tomorrow. While the Republican-controlled House passed a short-term bill to keep the government open through November 21st, it has failed to pass in the Senate because Trump needs Democratic votes.
Last week, he chickened out of a meeting with Democratic leadership and claimed that their demands were “unserious and ridiculous.” Rather than discuss what they’re actually asking for — which is certain promises to protect healthcare for the American people — Trump accused them of wanting “free healthcare for Illegal Aliens,” open borders, and “transgender operations for everybody.” If he’s just going to invent demands out of thin air and shoot them down, real negotiations are impossible.
In reality, Democrats are trying to address crucial insurance subsidies used by over 20 million Americans that are slated to expire at the end of 2025. Trump can’t acknowledge this fact, because doing so would mean admitting that he is once again throwing the American people to the wolves. His anti-healthcare legacy is worsening by the day, most prominently demonstrated in the $1 trillion in funding that he cut from Medicaid with his “big, beautiful bill.”
Democrats must stand strong here. Trump is historically unpopular and growing more overtly fascist by the day. His tariffs have devastated the global economy and skyrocketed inflation and his cruel immigration crackdowns have horrified the American people. Rolling over for him will only make things worse.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is already trying to blame Democrats for a possible shutdown, but the public is smarter than that. Republicans control every branch of government right now. If there’s a shutdown, Donald Trump is solely to blame.
